The Internet and WWW: The History of the World's Most Important Communication System

The world wide web is a large and powerful place. On it, users all over the world can access any information on any topic they desire. It is something that allows us to, most importantly, communicate and search globally but would have never been created without the Advanced Research Projects Agency, the internet, hypertext transfer protocol, and hypertext markup language. What would our lives be without this very fundamental feature?

DARPA and ARPANET work to create communication system

The whole concept of communication through a bigger program was originated by DARPA--the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Out of need to create a computer network, they created ARPANET or Advanced Research Projects Agency network as the nation's first computer network. At the time, its use was strictly for colleges****. This program did not yet established what they called a protocol, or a way for computers to communicate with each other. This creation of a protocol was absolutely necessary for a functioning process of communication between computers.

Email created as means for immediate communication between computers

Even before the internet was created, Ray Tomlinson created email as a direct way for people to communicate from computer to computer using such protocols. Faster and more common than writing letters through the U.S. postal service, email was nicknamed the "killer app" of the internet became the most important thing invented technology-wise before the internet. It was created in 1971 and used the only preposition on the keyboard, the @ sign, as the symbol of email since any other letter would be quite confusing. While this was a large step forward in developing communication over computers, it was simply not enough. Shortly after email was invented, an internet protocol was finally introduced that allowed for the computer communication we now have today.

Finally uniform communication platform with creation of the internet and www

The term "internet" was introduced by Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn in 1974 along with their design for the transmission control protocol. This TCP, supposed to be a central part of the internet protocol, contributed to the same IP or internet protocol that we use on our computers today. Despite contrary beliefs, there is a difference between the world wide web and internet. The world wide web uses internet to launch it, but the terms are not interchangeable since the internet is also responsible for the use of email. The date of the creation of the internet is unknown, but the creation of the world wide web came shortly after in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee in a Swiss physics laboratory. At the time, only professional researchers had access to the material and the hyperlinks on the internet weren't really functional yet. Until Berners-Leecreated hypertext transfer protocol or what we know as HTTP, which is really what created more accessible webpages that larger groups of people began using. Hypertext markup language known as HTML and extensible markup language know as XML helped connect documents and files by making hyperlinks that connect you to another page. All these complicated factors as well as the creation of browsers and interfaces allow for the complex system we would be so desperate without in our daily lives.

The internet...what would we do without it?

Not only does the internet help us do almost anything technologically available to us, but it also opens a whole new realm of knowledge that would take too long to find in any library or encyclopedia. The question is, are there any negative aspects of the internet? Or could we even live without it? Life would be so very different if the internet had never been created. Some people still believe that the internet is a menace and think it should cease to exist all together. Others believe that things such as piracy, pornography, and other negatives to the world wide web are good enough reasons to shut it down. However, I as well as many other people feel that the internet and the world wide web have created opportunities for the world to grow in knowledge, communication, and intelligence that we need in today's society.

  1. Rachel,
I couldn't agree more that society would be drastically effected (in a terrible way) if the Internet were to be shut down. The Internet cannot be seen as a luxury to those of us who can access it, as it had for a large portion of its existence. Today, we live in a world where the Internet should be considered a necessity. Some people today have jobs based on the internet. Many students base their entire college career on working with the Internet and other emerging technologies. For most of its existence, the Internet was seen as a tool that would benefit many areas of work, research and study. However, I feel today that those same areas of work are actually reliant on the use of the Internet. Without it, much of today's supply of information would be wiped out, and as you mentioned, the largest communication system in the world would be silenced.

  2. The invention of the internet has opened up a lot of opportunities for most people. With all inventions are pros and cons. What people fail to realize is that even though the internet has infiltrated the lives of many, there are still many that either refuse to use it or simply do not have access.

Rachel states that the internet allows people to increase their knowledge but, if that is the case then there are a large amount of people who are left out. As our generation grows older, there will be less and less who are able to reject the internet as it has become a lifestyle. Privacy is the biggest concern that people have but, I am not sure that the concern with privacy will be enough to get people to turn away from the internet.
